Early Years

Masami Odate (大館昌美, Ōdate Masami), known more broadly as Io Shirai, was born on May 8, 1990, in the picturesque city of Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

From a young age, Masami was fascinated by the world of sports and combat. She grew up in a sporty family, where her older sister, Mio Shirai, also had a passion for wrestling. It was Mio who introduced her younger sister to the world of professional wrestling, becoming her mentor and inspiration. Their joint training sessions and determination strengthened their bond, giving Masami a solid foundation for developing her career.

At just 16 years old, Masami Odate took a bold step, debuting as a professional wrestler. Her first performances in the ring, where she teamed up with her sister Mio, quickly drew attention thanks to their exceptional synchronization and spectacular matches. Together, as a tag team, they began to gain recognition on Japanese rings, opening doors to greater challenges and successes on the international wrestling scene.

Career Beginnings

Masami Odate made her professional ring debut on March 4, 2007, at just 16 years old. Alongside her sister Mio Shirai, they formed a dynamic tag team that quickly gained recognition among wrestling fans. Under the ring names Io and Mio Shirai (紫雷 Shirai, meaning "purple lightning"), the sisters started their careers, representing Team Makehen, created by trainer Tomohiko Hashimoto. Their debut match, where they teamed up with Toshie Uematsu against Erika Ura, Nozomi Takesako, and Yuri Urai, kicked off a series of spectacular fights that paved the way for their success.

Masami's early career was filled with intensive training and numerous performances in independent wrestling promotions both in Japan and Mexico. In Japan, the Shirai sisters fought for organizations such as Pro Wrestling Wave, JWP Joshi Puroresu, and Sendai Girls' Pro Wrestling, gaining valuable experience and solidifying their position in the wrestling world. In Mexico, where Masami performed under the ring name Oyuki, she had the opportunity to hone her skills and gain new fans.

In 2010, Masami and Mio joined forces with another talented wrestler, Kana, forming the stable known as Triple Tails. Debuting as a group during an event by NEO Japan Ladies Pro Wrestling, Triple Tails quickly became one of the most exciting teams on the Japanese wrestling scene. Their first joint victory over Ayumi Kurihara, Hikaru Shida, and Yoshiko Tamura initiated a series of spectacular matches that brought them popularity and recognition.

Collaboration with Kana and the formation of Triple Tails allowed Masami to develop her wrestling style and gain valuable tactical skills. Thanks to this cooperation, Masami Odate gained not only new experiences but also became a recognizable figure in the professional wrestling world, opening doors to further successes on the international stage.

Life's Twists and Turns

In 2012, the life of Masami Odate, known more widely as Io Shirai, took a dramatic turn. The wrestler was arrested on charges of smuggling marijuana into Japan. Odate and her partner, Kazushige Nosawa, were detained at Narita Airport upon returning from Mexico, where 75 grams of marijuana were found hidden in paintings they brought as gifts from fans. Both denied the charges, claiming they were unaware of the drugs' presence in the gifts.

The arrest had a significant impact on Odate's career and personal life. The suspension of her professional activities and spending several weeks in detention took a toll on her psyche and reputation. After three weeks in detention, she was released but had to face serious image consequences. Many fans and industry colleagues turned away from her, and her career in Stardom, one of Japan's leading wrestling organizations, hung in the balance. In Europe, possession of marijuana may not raise such emotions, even if it is illegal like in Poland, but remember, this is Asia, Japan. Possession of drugs there is considered a serious offense, both legally (in Malaysia it can be punished by death) and morally and socially.

However, Masami Odate did not give up. After being released from detention and officially cleared of the charges by the prosecutor's office, she publicly apologized to her fans and colleagues, expressing deep regret for any inconvenience caused by the situation. She decided to focus on rebuilding her career and regaining the trust of both fans and colleagues. With the support of her loved ones and intense training, she returned to the ring, demonstrating her unwavering determination and resilience.

Odate's return to wrestling was full of successes. She resumed her cooperation with Stardom, quickly regaining her position as a top wrestler. Her unwavering attitude and persistence in the face of adversity made her even stronger and more determined than ever before. Thanks to her strength of character and professionalism, Masami Odate turned the darkest period of her life into a foundation on which she built an even more impressive career.

Success in World Wonder Ring Stardom

After the difficult period associated with her arrest, Masami Odate made a powerful return to wrestling, competing in the prestigious Japanese organization World Wonder Ring Stardom. Her transition to Stardom proved to be a key moment in her career, opening the way to numerous successes and titles.

Masami quickly proved to be one of the brightest talents in the organization. In 2013, she won her first World of Stardom Championship, defeating Alpha Female and becoming the third champion in the title's history. Her reign lasted an impressive 468 days, during which she defended the title ten times, setting a record for the organization. During her career in Stardom, Masami also won the Wonder of Stardom Championship twice, as well as other titles such as the High Speed Championship, Goddesses of Stardom Championship, and Artist of Stardom Championship.

Masami's achievements in Stardom were not limited to winning titles. Her incredible skills and unwavering determination earned her three consecutive Tokyo Sports Joshi Puroresu Grand Prizes in 2015, 2016, and 2017. This prestigious award, given to the best female wrestler of the year in Japan, confirmed her status as one of the country's top wrestlers.

WWE!

Masami Odate's transition to WWE in 2018 was one of the most anticipated transfers in the wrestling world that year. Speculation about her move to the world's largest wrestling organization had been circulating since 2016, when media reported on her secret visits to WWE's Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. The official confirmation of her transition to WWE came in June 2018, sparking huge interest and excitement among fans.

Io Shirai's first performances in WWE took place in NXT, where she quickly proved her skills and potential. She debuted during the 2018 Mae Young Classic tournament, where she reached the final, ultimately losing to Toni Storm. Her impressive performances and wrestling style quickly gained her a large fan base and critical acclaim.

In the following months, Io continued her career in NXT, achieving further successes. In June 2020, she won the prestigious NXT Women's Championship, defeating Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in an exciting triple threat match at NXT TakeOver: In Your House. Her reign as champion lasted 304 days, during which she defended the title multiple times, solidifying her position as one of NXT's top wrestlers.

However, the road to success in WWE was not without its challenges. Io Shirai had to deal with health issues that delayed her full debut in WWE. During routine medical examinations, problems with her neck and heart were discovered, causing WWE to initially withdraw its contract offer. After a few months and further medical consultations, WWE re-offered the contract, which Io accepted this time.
